Infection with a fungus decreases the heat and cold tolerance of insects, influences insect behavior, study finds - Phys.Org

The researchers raised aphids (Acyrtociphon pisum) and ladybeetles (Hippodamia convergens) on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) plants. Credit: Penn State We humans tend to avoid harsh conditions when we are sick, instead seeking out the comfort of our climate-controlled homes. New research shows that sick insects may also be sensitive to extreme temperatures, and it could be the pathogen itself that drives their behavior. An international team of researchers has found that infection with a fungus reduces the thermal tolerance of an aphid and its beetle predator—the common ladybeetle—by more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit compared to healthy individuals. As a result, infected insects are

Share selection to: As the world grapples with rolling out various vaccines for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, there are still many unknowns. For how long will a vaccine be effective? How effective will vaccines be against new strains? How optimal can we make future vaccines? There are questions also over what future research will reveal about the virus. How does it affect people differently? Do we fully understand the mechanisms of transmission? What about future coronaviruses? In the hunt for answers it would be wise to take a close look at chickens. The global poultry industry has learned to live with a deadly coronavirus. Pathogenic Effects of Probiotics in Children With Acute Gastroenteritis - Infectious Disease Advisor

Image
Among children with acute gastroenteritis, probiotic treatment with either combination Lactobacillus rhamnosus and L helveticus or L rhamnosus GG alone did not result in a decreased risk for severe disease compared with placebo, according to results of a study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases . A team of researchers analyzed patient-level data from 2 multicenter randomized, placebo-controlled trials performed in pediatric emergency departments in Canada and the United States. The trials included patients with acute gastroenteritis who were aged 3 to 48 months and had greater than 3 diarrheal episodes in the past 24 hours. In addition, patients had to be symptomatic for less than 72 hours and less than 7 days to be eligible for the Canadian trial and US trial, respectively. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 fashion; those included in the Canadian trial were treated with either a probiotic combination of L rhamnosus and L helveticus or placebo, and th

Does that mean you need to eat a low-fat diet to feel your best? Not necessarily, but if you notice that your IBS symptoms get worse on days when you eat particularly rich and fatty meals—especially creamy dishes, cured meats, fried foods, or fast food like pizza—then that's something worth paying attention to. If fat seems to be your culprit, your doctor or dietitian may recommend following an elimination plan to identify specific fatty food triggers, and then assess your fat intake to see what kind of adjustments can be made based on your personal needs. Gluten-free diet Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. If you have celiac disease, eating gluten sets off a wonky immune response that triggers lots of inflammation, leading to some really severe symptoms that can cause intestinal damage. Many people with IBS report experiencing symptoms after eating foods that contain gluten, even if they don't have a wheat allergy or celiac disease, research shows. Experts re
