On social welfare, views in EU can surprise and emerging markets bring new perspectives - Phys.org

Image
Researchers are studying how the notion of social welfare is evolving in Europe and beyond. Credit: © Ridofranz, iStock.com Public perceptions of "social Europe" signal support for more EU integration, while new welfare regimes abroad highlight a worldwide trend. More than half of a century of economic and political integration in the EU has stripped away many taboos about pooling national powers in a third area: social policy. While welfare firmly remains the responsibility of Member States, the case for EU institutions to play a stronger role in social matters such as wage rules, pension benefits, unemployment assistance and gender equality has gained ground. The eurozone crisis and more recent COVID-19 pandemic have reinforced the case by widening economic and social disparities across the EU. Horizon ...

Flint-based foster care organization connects community agencies during Saginaw symposium - MLive.com

Image
SAGINAW TWP, MI— Neglect and poverty are not the same thing, according to Ennis Center for Children and Families and Children Together Founder Bob Ennis, who led a symposium on caring for children in the foster care system Friday, April 21, at Saginaw Township's Horizons Conference Center. The five-hour symposium gave representatives from FACT, a Flint-based operation, the chance to present plans to reduce the number of children in foster care and how to provide care for them or their families before their situation gets to a point where foster care is needed. FACT CEO Bridgitt McCaughey was one of those representatives at the gathering, who said the mission of the organization is to empower children and families while providing a community-based system of care and prevention that bring coordinated support to families. "We're pulling together all different community organizations for a common cause- that's to provide services and support to our children and families,...

Wyoming abortion clinic opens despite arson, legal obstacles - ABC News

Image
CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Wyoming's first full-service abortion clinic in years defiantly opened Thursday nearly one year after an arson attack ravaged it and despite looming laws that could shut it down with some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the U.S. The clinic in a small stucco building on a busy street in Wyoming's second-biggest city of Casper is less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Interstate 25, where the occasional anti-abortion billboard stands against the open, sparsely populated landscape. Last May, a few weeks before the clinic was set to open, a fire tore through building, leaving soot-stained, smashed windows and police tape to mark the clinic site in downtown Casper. A woman who has since been arrested had broken a window, filled aluminum pans with gasoline and set it ablaze, authorities say. She told told investigators that she opposes abortion and was experiencing anxiety over the facility opening. With its fire damage repaired, the Wellspring Health Acces...

Q&A: New insights into chikungunya virus outbreaks in Brazil - Imperial College London

Image
Since its introduction in 2014, chikungunya has caused more than one million infections in Brazil through multiple epidemic waves. Yet despite its impact, it is often overlooked for other mosquito-borne infectious diseases, such as dengue and Zika, leading to its true case numbers and severity being underestimated.  In a recent study published in The Lancet Microbe, researchers in the UK, Brazil and the United States combined genomic data on the virus with epidemiological models to gain new insights into the ongoing chikungunya epidemic in Brazil. Dr Nuno Faria from the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis in the School of Public Health spoke to Ryan O'Hare to explain the work and what it means for this infectious disease.  Q - What is chikungunya and how does it spread?  Nuno Faria - Chikungunya is an infectious disease ...

Uptick in rCDI Coincided with COVID-19, According to New Analysis - Contagionlive.com

Image
Five years of data from a county in Connecticut suggest the arrival of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to an increase in cases of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). Before that, according to the study's authors, the overall trend had been downward. The data were published in the journal Emerging Infectious Disease. People with CDI have a roughly 30% risk of recurrence, noted corresponding author James Hadler, MD, MPH, of the Yale School of Public Health. Cases of CDI tend to become more severe with each recurrence a patient experiences. Historically, one of the most common places people have become infected with CDI has been healthcare facilities. Hadler and colleagues wrote that efforts to reduce healthcare-associated CDI appear to be working, but they said the incidence of community-associated (CA) cases remains stable. The investigators wanted to see if they could identify trends in rCDI and also identify risk factors for recurrence. They ...

Staph Infection vs. MRSA: Similarities and Differences - Verywell Health

Image
Staphylococcus aureus  (staph) is one of the most common bacterial organisms that reside on the skin. Usually, it does not cause problems, but it can lead to several types of infections when it gets under the skin, in the blood, or to other body organs. Methicillin-resistant  Staphylococcus aureus  (MRSA) is the same bacteria, but a strain that is resistant to certain commonly used antibiotics (drugs that prevent the growth of or kill bacteria). This article discusses the differences between MRSA and the typical staph infection, known as methicillin-sensitive  Staphylococcus aureus  (MSSA), as well as how to treat and prevent them. Illustration by Mira Norian for Verywell Health MRSA and Staph MRSA is a type of staph, so people can develop the same types of infections with either organism. The difference between the two is that MRSA is more difficult to treat since it is resistant to certain...
