United Way Health Checks scheduled in Monroe County - Monroe Evening News
Two Health Checks have been set in Monroe County.
Free and low-cost tests and services will be offered on Oct. 6 at Heritage Baptist Church, 612 Strasburg Rd. in Monroe, and on Nov. 3 at Carleton United Methodist Church, 11435 Grafton Rd. in Carleton. Both will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. A 12-hour fast from food and water is recommended; medications can be taken with a water.
The events are offered by the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties and ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, along with three major partners, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Family Medical Center and the Monroe County Health Department. Initial funding for the project comes from ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital and the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties, while the partners conduct all the testing, lab work and supply staffing and volunteers.
The annual Health Checks provide low-cost health testing and health information in the spring and fall.

A blood panel test is available for $20.
The main test offered is a Blood Panel comprised of 22 tests, including a complete blood count, glucose, kidney function, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, thyroid function and total cholesterol check.
Additional Vitamin D and HA1C tests are available. Vitamin D tests measure how much vitamin D is in the body.
"Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and a lack of it can lead to health problems, including cardiovascular disease," organizers said. "An HA1C (also called glycohemoglobin) is a blood test that is an aid in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. It is an index of the person's blood sugar from the previous few months. All tests range in price from $5 to $20."
Colorectal cancer kits, if available, will be $5.
Blood pressures is always taken before blood draws can be made.
Health Checks usually offers a memory test and legal information from Monroe County Senior Legal Services. ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital sends staff from their its departments, including Nutrition Counseling, Pharmacy, Pulmonary Functions, Pulmonary Rehab, Cardiaic Rehab, Women's Center Health, Family Center Mental Health Center. Also involved is the Monroe County Library System, and the Monroe Cancer Connection.
The Monroe County Health Department will be onsite offering a variety of vaccines.
Free medication disposal will be available at both sites. No syringes, liquids or creams will be accepted.
"This is a safe way for you to dispose of any expired or unused prescription or over-the-counter medication. Drop-off is anonymous, and any patient identifying information will be destroyed," organizers said.
Medication disposal is offered through a partnership with the Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition, the Monroe County Health Department, ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, Michigan State Police and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Before leaving the site, each patient receices a a private consulution with a registered nurse to review test results and answer questions. The nurses are from Monroe County Health Department. Test results are mailed to the individuals home address, and it is the patient's responsibly to take the results to their medical professional.
