Endometriosis: A Chronic Disease - Statista

Image
Headway is finally being made towards a better understanding of endometriosis, a chronic and often painful disease that affects at least 10 percent of menstruating people. The French National Authority for Health proposed in January that some women could have access to a new and "promising" saliva test, which would be used for diagnosis and reported to be 95 percent accurate. According to data from the World Health Organization as well as the French association fighting endometriosis EndoFrance, women living with the disease can currently expect to wait seven years on average before receiving a diagnosis. Endometriosis can present itself in a range of ways, with symptoms often akin to those of other conditions. This contributes to delays in diagnosis. Endometriosis in itself is difficult to diagnose: while a pelvic ultrasound, an MRI or an x-ray examination of the uterus and tubes can help identify endometriosis, only surgical visualization by laparoscopy is so far able to co...

New CA data Social programs reduce crime - Public News Service

Image
Programs intended to reduce the chances that someone will end up back behind bars are working, according to a new analysis of California state data. A new report finds that people who participated in a social program funded by Proposition 47 had a recidivism rate of 15.3% compared with 35% to 45% for people traditionally incarcerated by the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Linda Penner, chairperson of the California Board of State and Community Corrections, which produced the report, is supportive. "These results indicate that Prop 47 is delivering the results voters wanted: safer communities where individuals who commit low-level crimes are directed to housing, employment, mental-health and substance-use services instead of prison," she said. Proposition 47 raised the threshold for a theft to qualify as a felony, which lowered the number of people getting jail time. It has saved the state $800 million in incarceration costs since it passed in 2014 - money that w...

Cutting Edge: Topdressing sands, plant-parasitic nematodes - GCMOnline.com - Golf Course Management magazine

Image
Particle size characteristics of putting green root-zone and topdressing sands Sand topdressing is a routine maintenance practice on golf course putting greens. It is recommended that topdressing sands contain particles of similar diameter classes to those within the root zone; however, use of high-density turfgrass cultivars can make this challenging. Research was conducted in 2023 to compare the physical composition of topdressing sands to those within root zones of creeping bentgrass (CBG; Agrostis stolonifera L.) and ultradwarf bermudagrass (UDBG; Cynodon dactylon L. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) putting greens. Root-zone and topdressing sand samples were collected from 23 putting greens across Tennessee. Ten samples (3.94 inches by 0.75 inch/10 centimeters by 1.9 centimeters) were extracted from root zones using a soil probe, and 8.8 ounces (250 grams) of topdressing sand was collected from stockpiles. Particle size distributions of root-zone and topdressing sands...

Emergence of a zoonotic pathogen in a coastal marine sentinel: Capillaria hepatica (syn. Calodium hepaticum ... - USGS (.gov)

Capillaria hepatica is a globally distributed zoonotic nematode parasite that most commonly infects feral and native rats. Soil contact, pica, and living in close proximity to rat populations are risk factors for human infection. Larval nematodes and eggs that were morphologically consistent with C. hepatica were observed microscopically in livers of stranded southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) from California. Large (90–100 × 45–55 μm), barrel-shaped non-embryonated parasite eggs with large polar prominences and a roughened or striated surface, or 105–120 μm diameter larval aphasmid nematode profiles with a prominent stichosome and hypodermal bands were observed in the livers of three otters. The liver of a fourth animal exhibited serpiginous tracts of necrosis, micro-cavitation and pleocellular inflammation, with intralesional linear eosinophilic material that resembled cuticle from degenerating metazoan parasites. Capillaria hepatica-assoc...

Exploiting lung adaptation and phage steering to clear pan-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in vivo - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major nosocomial pathogen that causes severe disease including sepsis. Carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a priority 1 pathogen, with urgent need for new therapeutics. As such, there is renewed interest in using bacteriophages as a therapeutic. However, the dynamics of treating pan-resistant P. aeruginosa with phage in vivo are poorly understood. Using a pan-resistant P. aeruginosa in vivo infection model, phage therapy displays strong therapeutic potential, clearing infection from the blood, kidneys, and spleen. Remaining bacteria in the lungs and liver displays phage resistance due to limiting phage adsorption. Yet, resistance to phage results in re-sensitisation to a wide range of antibiotics. In this work, we use phage steering in vivo, pre-exposing a pan resistant P. aeruginosa infection with a phage cocktail to re-sensitise bacteria to antibiotics, clearing the infection from all organs. ...

Deadline looms for SoonerCare members to choose SoonerSelect health plans, says OHCA - KOKH FOX25

Image
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — Most SoonerCare members are going to start getting their health care services covered in a new way starting April 1, 2024. The deadline for open enrollment with the new program, SoonerSelect, is quickly approaching. The Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) says that the deadline is March 10, 2024, and if SoonerCare members who qualify for SoonerSelect do not choose a plan by March 10th, the agency will auto-assign them one. According to OHCA, about 80% of current SoonerCare members are shifting to SoonerSelect in April, "It's really a new direction for us in providing quality health care options to Oklahomans who qualify for sooner care which are Medicaid benefits in Oklahoma," said OHCA's Chief Executive Officer, Ellen Buettner. The OHCA says those who are shifting have already received personal letters containing detailed instructions on accessing and selecting their preferred plans. Under SoonerSelect, there are several different health and ...

Brain Parasites: Types, Causes, Complications - Verywell Health

Image
Parasitic infections can invade practically any part of the body. Parasites that infect the central nervous system, which includes the brain, are potentially the most damaging and the most disturbing. Not only may these conditions sometimes be fatal, but they can result in lifelong disability. Early recognition and prompt treatment are important in order to reduce both mortality and the frequently catastrophic aftermath of these diseases. Some parasitic infections involving the central nervous system may occur in anyone regardless of their underlying health. In contrast, opportunistic parasitic infections are those that are more likely to occur when a person has a suppressed immune system due to cancer treatments, HIV, or other chronic medical conditions. Neurological Parasitic Infections We don't mind informing someone that we have a bacterial or viral infection, like strep throat or influenza. Most of us, though, would hesitate before confe...
